About the book

A work to return to, not to consume.

The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā is one of the classic manuals of haṭha yoga. Svātmārāma composed it in Sanskrit around the 15th century, gathering earlier teachings, and from the first verse he makes his aim clear: work with the body and breath exists to prepare for rāja yoga, the stillness of the mind. The text has four chapters. The first covers posture and moderation in the practitioner's life. The second, breath control and the cleansings. The third, the seals and locks. The fourth, absorption, when mind and breath dissolve. This edition is a faithful ChaTutor rendering from the Sanskrit, with the 389 verses of the Jyotsnā recension and notes informed by Brahmānanda's commentary. The advanced techniques are reproduced as a historical document, not as instructions.

**Safety notice.** This book faithfully translates a historical manual. Its breath retentions, locks, seals and internal cleansings are presented as traditional practices and textual content, not instructions. Several can cause serious harm: do not attempt them without a qualified in-person teacher, and with pregnancy, high blood pressure, or heart, respiratory, eye or psychiatric conditions, consult a health professional. Its promises of cure are traditional claims, not medical facts.

When the breath moves, the mind moves; when the breath is still, the mind is still, and the yogin attains steadiness.

The author

Svātmārāma

Svātmārāma was a yogi of the Nātha tradition who composed this text around the 15th century, drawing on earlier works. Little is known of his life beyond the lineage he lists at the opening. His manual became the classic reference for haṭha yoga. Brahmānanda wrote the Jyotsnā in the 19th century, the commentary that guides the notes in this edition.

Questions

Can I learn the techniques from this book?

That is not its purpose. Here it is read as a historical text. The advanced techniques it describes require a qualified in-person teacher, and the tutor will not guide you through them.

Am I really talking with Svātmārāma?

No. The conversation is an AI recreation* inspired by the text: it is not Svātmārāma and it can be wrong. Use it to think the book through, not as the author's own word.

How much does it cost?

The book costs US$4.99, or it comes included in ChaTutor Plus. You can read the opening of chapter 1 without signing up. A free account unlocks the whole chapter, the tutor and a full book free every week.

Is the book complete?

Yes: the complete text, chapter by chapter, in English and Spanish.
