About the book

A work to return to, not to consume.

Almustafa has lived twelve years in the city of Orphalese, waiting for the ship that will take him home. When he finally sees it coming, the people ask him to speak to them before he leaves. So begins The Prophet: a series of short answers, in poetic prose, on love, marriage, children, work, joy and sorrow, crime and punishment, laws, time, good and evil, death. Gibran gives no rules, only images: love that harvests you, work as love made visible, sorrow that makes room for joy, reason and passion as rudder and sails. The book ends with Almustafa's farewell. It is short, can be read in an afternoon, and is the kind of book people keep by the bed and reopen at turning points, because it keeps you company without preaching.

The author

Kahlil Gibran

He spent his last years in New York, where he belonged to a circle of émigré Arab writers. The Prophet, published in 1923 with his own illustrations, is his best-known work and one of the most translated books of the 20th century.
