About the book

A work to return to, not to consume.

Published in 1904, this book was one of the first to introduce Western readers to ideas from yogic breathing. It opens with a phrase that sums it up, “breath is life”, and offers two readings of the breath: the physiological one, as it was understood then, and the esoteric one, tied to the idea of prana. It argues for nose breathing as a basic habit, describes four ways of breathing and the “complete breath”, which joins belly, ribs and chest in one movement, and presents developing exercises, rhythmic breathing and what it calls psychic and spiritual breathing. It mixes observations of its time with ideas that today read as the history of esotericism rather than science. This edition translates it faithfully and comes with a clear notice: the retentions and advanced exercises are the book's content, not instructions.

**Safety notice.** The book includes breath retentions and advanced exercises, plus 1904 health claims that are not medical facts. These are traditional practices, read here as a historical text, not instructions: do not hold or force your breath without a qualified teacher, and with pregnancy, high blood pressure, or heart, respiratory or psychiatric conditions, consult a health professional.

The author

Yogi Ramacharaka

Yogi Ramacharaka was the pen name of William Walker Atkinson (1862–1932), an American lawyer and writer. After a personal crisis he joined the New Thought movement and published, under several names, dozens of books on the mind, the will and yoga. The works signed as Ramacharaka, which appeared in the early 20th century, spread his own and very influential version of yogic ideas in the West.

Questions

Are its health claims proven?

No. They are 1904 claims, not medical facts. The tutor helps you separate the historical from what is known today, and it does not replace a health professional.

Am I really talking with Yogi Ramacharaka?

No. The conversation is an AI recreation* inspired by the text: it is not Yogi Ramacharaka and it can be wrong. Use it to think the book through, not as the author's own word.

How much does it cost?

The book costs US$4.99, or it comes included in ChaTutor Plus. You can read the opening of chapter 1 without signing up. A free account unlocks the whole chapter, the tutor and a full book free every week.

Is the book complete?

Yes: the complete text, chapter by chapter, in English and Spanish.
