About the book

A work to return to, not to consume.

The Dialogues are essays Seneca addressed to friends and family, each on a concrete question. Why do bad things happen to good people? How do you keep your calm when insulted? What is anger, and how do you stop it at its first impulse? How do you go through grief without denying it or making it endless? What makes a happy life? Why does life seem short when in fact we waste it? This edition gathers fourteen texts, among them the three books On Anger, Of the Shortness of Life, Of Peace of Mind, three consolations and the two books On Clemency. Seneca writes with unforgettable images, like fire trying gold, and practical advice you can use today. He speaks as someone who knew power, exile and downfall.

The author

Seneca

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BCE–65 CE) was born in Córdoba, in Roman Hispania, and was a Stoic philosopher, playwright and statesman. He spent eight years in exile on Corsica, then became tutor and adviser to the young Nero and amassed a great fortune. When he fell from favor, the emperor ordered him to take his own life. His dialogues, letters and tragedies shaped European thought for centuries.

Questions

Do I have to read all fourteen dialogues in order?

No. Each is a standalone essay. Start with the one that speaks to what you are living through: anger, grief, time or peace of mind.

Am I really talking with Seneca?

No. The conversation is an AI recreation* inspired by the text: it is not Seneca and it can be wrong. Use it to think the book through, not as the author's own word.

How much does it cost?

The book costs US$4.99, or it comes included in ChaTutor Plus. You can read the opening of chapter 1 without signing up. A free account unlocks the whole chapter, the tutor and a full book free every week.

Is the book complete?

Yes: the complete text, chapter by chapter, in English and Spanish.
